The province

Get to know Cakaudrove

Cakaudrove is the largest province of Fiji by area: it covers the southeast of Vanua Levu and nearby islands such as Taveuni, Rabi and Kioa. The administrative centre is Savusavu, and the village of Somosomo on Taveuni is the seat of the Tui Cakau, the province’s high chief.

Taveuni, the garden island, is covered in tropical rainforest. Bouma National Park contains the Tavoro waterfalls and the Lavena coastal track, which passes beaches and villages to a waterfall in a canyon. High on the island, Tagimaucia Lake, in a crater, gives its name to the red-and-white flower that only grows there.

The Somosomo Strait, between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, hosts the Rainbow Reef, known for its colorful soft corals. In Waiyevo, a marker indicates the 180° meridian that crosses the island.

Savusavu, on southern Vanua Levu, sits in a sheltered bay favoured by yachts, with hot springs in town, pearl farming and diving. Rabi is the island where the Banaban community lives, brought from Kiribati in the 20th century.

When to go

The dry season, from May to October, is best for the Bouma trails and for diving in the Somosomo Strait. Taveuni is wet year-round, and from November to April—the hot, cyclone season—the waterfalls usually carry more water. The tagimaucia flower is most common between late September and late December.

Getting there

Taveuni has Matei Airport (TVU) and Savusavu has its own (SVU), both served by domestic flights from Nadi and from Suva. Confirm before booking. There are ferries between Savusavu and Taveuni, and boats also cross the strait from Vanua Levu to Taveuni. On Taveuni a road circles part of the island.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Cakaudrove

Taveuni or Savusavu: where to stay?

Taveuni is the choice for those who want the Bouma trails, diving at Rainbow Reef and the 180° meridian. Savusavu offers more shops, the yacht bay and the hot springs. With a week you can split your time between the two.

What is the Lavena coastal track like?

It starts at the village of Lavena on east Taveuni and follows the coast through beaches, forest and gardens to a waterfall where you must swim a short stretch inside the canyon. Allow half a day and bring swimwear.

Where is the 180° meridian on Taveuni?

In Waiyevo, on the west of the island, there is a marker that shows the line. Fiji uses a single time zone, and the International Date Line bends away from the country, so both sides of the marker are on the same day.

Do you need experience to dive at Rainbow Reef?

Currents in the Somosomo Strait can be strong, and many sites are recommended for divers with some experience. Operators from Taveuni and Vanua Levu also take beginners to calmer sites and run courses.
