About Plaza de los Fueros
The Plaza de los Fueros, also called Plaza Nueva, was laid out by the town council between 1687 and 1691 over the covered bed of the Queiles River. It stood between the old quarter and the city that was growing to the south and became the center of Tudela’s social life.
The square is rectangular, surrounded by buildings with balconies. For a long time it served as a bullring, and the façades bear medallions with bullfighting scenes and coats of arms of towns from the Ribera. The Casa del Reloj, dating to 1687, acquired its clock tower in the 19th century.
There is a bandstand in the center. The festivities of Santa Ana in July start in the square with the firing of the rocket, and it is also the focal point for the Fiestas de la Verdura in spring.
Around the square are the tourist office, the church of Santa María and several streets of tapas bars that lead to the old quarter and the cathedral.
