About Cathedral of Tudela (Cathedral of Santa María de Tudela)
After King Alfonso I of Aragon conquered Tudela in the 12th century, the city’s main mosque was replaced by a church. Construction of the present Cathedral of Santa María began in that century, initially as a collegiate church, with a Romanesque Latin-cross plan and an elevation already showing Gothic elements.
The Puerta del Juicio on the west façade is the best known of the three 13th-century doors. The arches are filled with figures representing the Last Judgment, with the righteous on one side and the condemned on the other. The main altarpiece, from the 15th century, is the work of Pedro Díaz de Oviedo.
The Romanesque cloister preserves carved capitals with scenes from the Gospels and the lives of the saints. In one of its galleries there are remains of the old mosque. Next to the cathedral stands the Baroque chapel of Santa Ana, the city’s patron saint.
The cathedral was declared a National Monument in 1884. Tourist visits are organized through the Museo de Tudela, in the former Palacio Decanal next door; opening hours vary throughout the year.
