About Arciprestal Church of the Assumption of Xixona

The archpriestal church of Our Lady of the Assumption is the main temple in Xixona’s center. It was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, in Renaissance style, in the lower part of the town, below the castle hill.

The stone bell tower is the most visible element of the complex: it ends in a finial covered with green and white tiles, which stands out among the town’s roofs.

The main altarpiece was remodeled in the 18th century and destroyed by a fire in 1971. Its reconstruction was undertaken by the artist Octavio Vicent. The interior houses altarpieces and images linked to the devotions of the town.

Higher up, near the path to the castle, are the remains of the old medieval church of Santa María, whose tympanum shows the Virgin beside a king traditionally identified as Jaime I.
