About Torre Grossa Castle
The castle of Xixona was built by the Almohads between the late 12th and the early 13th centuries, on the top of a steep hill above the town. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the main enclosure and the wall were erected, and the fortress came to defend the kingdom’s border.
The fortress stretches along almost the entire hilltop, with a double enclosure of masonry walls. Torre Grossa, to the north, is the defensive tower that gives its name to the complex and is the landmark in Xixona’s silhouette.
Torre Grossa and the alcazaba, the oldest elements, underwent a restoration designed by the architects Santiago Varela Botella and Santiago Varela Rizo, which consolidated the structures and included archaeological excavations. Signposted trails rise from the center up to the castle.
The visit is external and access is free. From the top, the view encompasses the town, the valley and the interior mountain ranges of Alicante.
