The city
Capital of the province of Tungurahua, at about 2,580 meters, in the valley between Latacunga and Baños de Agua Santa. It was almost completely rebuilt after the 1949 earthquake, and from that rebuilding the Fiesta de la Fruta y de las Flores was born, celebrated at Carnival. It is the birthplace of writers Juan Montalvo and Juan León Mera, remembered in house museums, and the city of the llapingacho, served at the Central Market.
