Milho Verde – MG Destination Historic Towns of Minas Gerais (Estrada Real) about 312 km from Belo Horizonte
How to get there
-
Rodoviária do Serro Serro · 25 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
From Serro it is about 25 km, mostly paved. From Diamantina, take the road that goes through São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras, with unpaved stretches. From Belo Horizonte, follow the MG-010 and BR-259 to Serro, a total of about 312 km. There are buses from Belo Horizonte to Serro and Diamantina; for the village, schedules are limited.
How many days
Two days allow you to see both churches, bathe in the Moinho and Carijó waterfalls, and walk or drive to São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras. Visitors coming from Diamantina can do both districts in one day, but without time for the waterfalls.
When to go
From November to April the waterfalls usually have more water and vegetation turns green, with almost daily afternoon rains. From May to September there is little rain, days are dry and nights cold; some falls have low flow. Holidays and New Year’s Eve fill the village.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Help. The bus goes to Serro and Diamantina, and transport to the village has few schedules. The Moinho and Carijó waterfalls are nearby and reachable on foot; others require a car or a longer trail. The road to São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras has unpaved sections.
