Biribiri – MG Destination Historic Towns of Minas Gerais (Estrada Real) about 305 km from Belo Horizonte

How to get there

  • Rodoviária de Diamantina Diamantina · 15 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

From Diamantina it's about 15 km on a well-maintained dirt road that regular cars can travel; the park entrance is about 13 km from the center. From Belo Horizonte, go to Diamantina via BR-040 and BR-367 or via MG-010 and BR-259, about 290 km. There is no regular bus to the village; agencies in Diamantina offer tours.

How many days

One day, leaving from Diamantina: morning at the park waterfalls and afternoon in the village. Those who want to hike the Caminho dos Escravos or visit more falls can book a second day.

When to go

From May to September the road is firm and the days are dry, with cold nights. From November to March the waterfalls usually have more water, but rain can make the road muddy and the river stronger. Weekends and holidays are the busiest times.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Yes, in practice. There is no regular public transport from Diamantina to the village, and the waterfalls are spread along the park road. Without a car, the alternatives are agency tours and taxis from Diamantina.
