About Canadian Museum of History
The Canadian Museum of History is in Gatineau on the Ottawa River bank, right across from Parliament Hill. The 1989 building was designed by architect Douglas Cardinal, of Métis and Blackfoot heritage, with curved forms inspired by landscapes shaped by glaciers and the river.
The Grand Hall, with a glass wall facing Parliament, houses totem poles and facades from Pacific coast houses, forming one of the largest collections of its kind. The First Nations gallery presents the history and culture of the country’s Indigenous peoples.
The galleries on Canadian history trace the country from early settlements to recent times, with objects, settings and testimony. The museum also includes the Children’s Museum and temporary exhibitions. Admission is charged; check the current fee schedule.
