About Plains of Abraham
The Plains of Abraham lie on the plateau west of the walls, on the cliff above the Saint Lawrence River. In September 1759, they were the scene of the battle in which General Wolfe's British troops defeated the French forces of the Marquis de Montcalm; both generals died. The battle was decisive for the end of New France.
Today the area is part of the Battlefields Park, one of the country’s major urban parks, with lawns, the Jeanne-d'Arc garden, trails and river lookouts. Two Martello towers, round fortifications from the early 19th century, can be visited in summer.
The Plains of Abraham Museum tells the story of the battle and the place. In summer the park hosts concerts from the music festival; in winter, cross-country ski trails and snow walks. There is no entrance fee for the park; the museum charges admission.
