About Citadel of Quebec
The Citadelle sits on the highest point of Cap Diamant, above the Saint Lawrence River. It was built by the British between 1820 and 1850, on earlier French works, to defend the city from an American attack that never came. It has a star shape with bastions and ditches.
It is the largest British fortress in North America and remains an active military base: it houses the Royal 22e Régiment, the French-speaking regiment of the Canadian Army. Part of it is also the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. For that reason, visits are guided and include the bastions, the barracks, the old prison and the regiment’s museum.
On summer mornings, generally from late June to early September, the changing of the guard takes place, with soldiers in red coats and bearskin hats. Admission is charged; check the current rates.
