About Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument
Queenston Heights is the escarpment where the Niagara River exits the canyon and reaches the plain that extends to Lake Ontario. In October 1812 it was the scene of a major battle of the War of 1812, won by British, Canadian and allied Indigenous forces.
British General Isaac Brock was killed in the fighting. A column of about 56 metres topped by a statue of the general was erected in his honour; inside, a narrow staircase leads to a small viewpoint, open part of the year. The surrounding park has trails that recount the battle.
From the hilltop you can see the Niagara River, the town of Lewiston on the American side, and the vineyard plain. At the foot of the hill lies the village of Queenston, with the house of Laura Secord, a heroine of the same war.
