About Fort George (Fort George National Historic Site)

Fort George was built by the British in the late 18th century to protect the mouth of the Niagara River and the then capital of Upper Canada. During the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States it was taken and occupied by American forces in 1813 and retaken months later.

The current fort is a reconstruction made in the 1930s based on the original plans. Inside the palisades and earthen bastions are the soldiers’ barracks, the officers’ quarters, the carpenter’s shop and the powder magazine, the only original building.

It is a national historic site administered by Parks Canada. In the warm months guides in period costume give musket‑firing demonstrations, military music and craft displays. Admission is charged; check the current rates.
