About Emerald Lake
Emerald Lake is about 11 km from Field, at the end of a road that branches off the Trans‑Canada Highway. It is the largest lake in Yoho National Park and has a green color caused, as with other lakes in the region, by rock flour carried by glacial melt.
A flat trail of about 5 km circles the lake, passing through forests, a gravel area left by avalanches, and wooden bridges. Mount President and other peaks reflect in the water on calm days. A wooden footbridge links the parking area to the shore, where there is a small hotel and the canoe rental point.
The lake is accessible year‑round; in winter it freezes and is used for cross‑country skiing. Access requires only the national parks pass. The parking lot is small and fills early in summer.
