About Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon is on the Bow Valley Parkway, about 25 km west of Banff. Johnston Creek carved a narrow canyon in the limestone, and metal walkways attached to the walls follow the water a few metres away, between forest and rock.

The trail to the lower falls is about 1.2 km and flat; a small tunnel in the rock leads to a viewpoint facing the fall. To the higher upper falls it’s about 2.6 km with a moderate climb. Those who continue another 3 km reach the Ink Pots, pools of differently coloured water fed by springs, in an open valley.

In winter the falls freeze and there are guided walks with traction devices for shoes. It’s one of the park’s most visited sites. The visit is covered by the national park pass, with no extra charge.
