Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. Aeropuerto Internacional Alcantarí is about 30 km away, in Yamparáez, a 40-minute taxi ride, with flights from La Paz, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. Buses arrive at the Terminal de Buses, 3 km from the center; from Potosí it's about 3 hours.
How many days
Two days: one for Plaza 25 de Mayo, Casa de la Libertad, the Cathedral and La Recoleta at sunset; another for Parque Cretácico and the museums. The city is also good for resting and acclimatizing to the altitude before Potosí and Uyuni.
When to go
All year round, with mild weather. The dry season usually runs from May to October, with sun and cool nights. From December to March it usually rains in the afternoons. In September, the festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the city's patron saint, features processions and dances.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. The center is explored on foot, on flat streets and short slopes, and taxis and minibuses cover journeys to the terminal and Parque Cretácico, which also has a tourist bus leaving from the square.
