About James Ensorhuis

James Ensor was born in Ostende in 1860 and died in the city in 1949. His parents ran a souvenir shop for beach tourists, and the carnival masks sold there became a central theme of his work, alongside skeletons, crowds and satirical scenes. Ensor was part of the Les XX art group and received the title of baron in 1929.

In 1917 he inherited from his uncle the house on Vlaanderenstraat, a few doors down from his parents' home, and lived there until the end of his life. After his death, the house was kept as it was and became a museum. In the blue-walled salon are objects that appear in his paintings, like the vase and the background piece painted in Débris.

Next to the house is the experience centre, with five interactive rooms. They show paintings that gain movement, the carnival masks, the painter's letters and photos, and explain why he chose his themes. There is a route designed for children and young people.

The visit helps to understand the Ostende in which Ensor lived — the Belle Époque seaside resort — and pairs well with Mu.ZEE, the city's art museum, which holds a large collection of his works.
