About Zwin Natuur Park

The Zwin is a former sea inlet that, in the Middle Ages, led ships to Bruges. Over time it filled with sand, and today it is a tidal area of dunes and salt marshes on the border between Bélgica and the Holanda. The Belgian part was declared in 1952 by Count Léon Lippens as the country's first nature reserve, and today is called Zwin Natuur Park.

The tide flows in and out across the plain, and the area attracts waterbirds and waders, especially during the spring and autumn migrations. There is also a colony of storks that nest within the park.

The visitor centre has exhibitions about the Zwin's natural features and a high viewpoint over the tidal plain. Trails and boardwalks lead to the dunes and the sea, and there is an area for breeding and rehabilitated birds.

On the Dutch side the Zwin continues as a natural area. The park is usually open year-round, with hours that change by season; confirm before visiting.
