About Esplanada Leopoldo I e praia de De Panne
The Esplanada Leopoldo I is the best-known stretch of De Panne’s promenade. It is where the monument to Belgium’s first king stands; he arrived in the country via De Panne on 17 July 1831, coming from England via Calais, to take the throne. The statue faces the beach and the sea.
De Panne’s beach is one of the widest on the Belgian coast, especially at low tide when the sand stretches for hundreds of metres. That width and the steady wind made the town the birthplace of sand yachting: in 1898 the Dumont brothers built the first ones for sport here, and clubs still offer lessons and rides. Check conditions and dates in advance.
Along the promenade there are apartment buildings, cafés and restaurants, and streets leading to the Dumont neighbourhood, with art nouveau, art déco and early 20th‑century modernist houses.
In summer the beach has lifeguard stations and marked bathing areas. The Mar do Norte water is usually cold even in summer.
