About Spioenkop (Wenduine)
The Spioenkop is a high dune on the shore of Wenduine, a village that is part of the De Haan municipality, about 4 km northeast of the centre. The name comes from a battle in the Boer War in South Africa at the start of the 20th century, which gave its name to several hills in Europe.
At the top of the dune there is a pavilion, and the view opens onto the North Sea, the beach, Wenduine's promenade and, on clear days, the coast as far as Blankenberge and Ostende.
Wenduine has the pace of a seaside village, with the seafront promenade, the windmill and the old water tower, a tower that has become a landmark in the landscape.
The Spioenkop pairs well with a walk along the beach from De Haan, returning by tram.
