About Concessie (bairro Belle Époque)

The Concessie is the original core of De Haan. At the end of the 19th century, the dune lands were granted to a company to create a planned seaside resort, hence the name. The layout avoids straight lines: the streets are curved and follow the dunes, with detached houses in gardens.

The buildings follow the style of Belle Époque resorts, with many Anglo‑Norman–inspired houses, high roofs, wooden verandas and towers. Much of it is protected, and the neighborhood is one of the best‑preserved areas of the Belgian coast, which in other resorts has been taken over by tall blocks.

In the centre is the pavilion at the De Haan aan Zee stop of the coastal tram, a wooden building from the early 20th century that serves as a tourist information point. Nearby is the Savoyarde villa where Albert Einstein lived for a few months in 1933, after leaving Germany.

The walk through the Concessie is done on foot or by bicycle, at a leisurely pace, entering the side streets and continuing to the seafront.
