About Stadhuis van Damme

The Stadhuis of Damme was completed in 1464, on the foundations of an older hall, when the village was still Bruges' port and benefited from the trade that passed through the Zwin. The Gothic façade, with turrets and statues, dominates the Markt square.

In 1468, Damme was the setting for the wedding of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, to Margaret of York, sister of the King of England. The ceremony is remembered as one of the great moments in the village's history.

In front of the town hall stands the statue of Jacob van Maerlant, a 13th-century poet who was the city's clerk and died there around 1300. He is considered one of the fathers of literature in the Flemish language.

The square is the starting point for exploring Damme on foot: from there the streets lead to the church of Nossa Senhora, to the Damse Vaart canal and to the old houses that house bookshops and restaurants.
