About Damse Vaart
Damme was linked to Bruges by the river Reie, which was later canalized. Today's Damse Vaart cuts the flat fields between the two towns in a straight line, and the banks are lined with poplars, some more than a hundred years old, with trunks twisted by the sea wind.
Bike and pedestrian paths run along the canal. It's about 7 kilometers from Bruges to Damme, on a flat route suitable for any cyclist. Those who continue beyond the village reach other polder hamlets on the way to the Dutch border.
In the sightseeing season, which usually runs from spring to early autumn, the paddle boat Lamme Goedzak makes the trip between the Noorweegse Kaai quay in Bruges and Damme. Days and times change each year; check before you go.
Near Damme's entrance, on the canal bank, stands the Schellemolen windmill, one of the most photographed images of the area.
