About De Fonteintjes (reserva natural)
The De Fonteintjes reserve is on the east side of Blankenberge, between the town and Zeebrugge. The name, which means "the little springs", comes from the freshwater springs that rise between the dunes and form small ponds and wetlands.
The landscape mixes dunes, wet fields and scrub, and attracts water and field birds, especially during migration seasons in spring and autumn. Trails and a viewpoint allow you to see the area without leaving the path.
Nearby are other natural areas, such as the Zeebos, a dune forest, and further south the Uitkerkse Polder reserve, of flooded fields.
It's a short, peaceful walk, different from the bustle of the promenade, and can be done on foot or by bike.
