About Sint-Romboutskathedraal
The Cathedral of St. Rumbold is Mechelen’s main monument and the seat of the archbishopric of Belgium. Construction began shortly after 1200, the church was consecrated in 1312 and the vaults were finished in the 15th century.
The tower was built between 1452 and 1520. Planned to be much taller, it ended up at 97 metres, and the flat top gives it an easily recognisable silhouette. Since 1999 it has been part of the group of belfries of Belgium and France inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The 538 steps first lead to the bell rooms and the former watchman’s dwelling, and then to the Skywalk, a platform at the top. The tower has two carillons, and Mechelen has a long tradition with this instrument, with a school of carillon players in the city. On a clear day it is often possible to spot the Atomium in Brussels.
Inside, the cathedral has a baroque altar, a carved pulpit and paintings, including works by Anthony van Dyck. Entry to the church is separate from the tower climb.
