About Zurenborg

Zurenborg is a residential neighbourhood southeast of the centre, between Antwerp and the Berchem district. It was largely built between 1894 and 1906, when wealthy families commissioned large houses, each in a different style.

The main street is Cogels-Osylei. There you’ll see Art Nouveau façades alongside neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, neoclassical houses and even imitations of Greek temples. Towers, balconies, stained glass and decorated tiles recur on almost every block.

Some houses are known by name: number 50, De Zonnebloem, has a sunflower on the façade, and the corner of numbers 2 and 4 features the Leão de Flandres. On neighbouring Transvaalstraat and Waterloostraat the run of façades continues.

In the northern part of the neighbourhood, Dageraadplaats square and Draakplaats concentrate cafés and restaurants popular with locals. It’s a quieter side of Antwerp, away from the tourist groups in the centre.
