About Snijders&Rockoxhuis

The Snijders&Rockoxhuis brings together two houses on Keizerstraat. One belonged to Nicolaas Rockox, mayor of Antuérpia for eight terms, a collector and close friend of Rubens. The other, called De Fortuyne, was the home of Frans Snijders, a painter specializing in animals, fruit and vegetables, who painted those elements in the works of other masters.

The rooms display the collection of old paintings of the KBC bank, the building's owner, hung as they were in wealthy 17th-century houses: paintings side by side, from floor to ceiling. There are works by Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Teniers, Quentin Matsys and Joachim Patinir, as well as several canvases by Snijders himself.

One of the most sought-after pieces is Os Provérbios, by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, with more than a hundred popular proverbs painted in a single scene. A digital screen next to it explains each one.

At the back, Rockox's garden has been reconstructed as a 17th-century urban garden, with orange trees and vines. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions on old Flemish painting.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

From one hour to one and a half hours.

Best time

Open Tuesday to Sunday. The rooms are small, so mornings are usually quieter. The garden is greener from spring to early autumn. Confirm the opening hours before you go.

How to get there

It is on Keizerstraat, about 450 metres east of the Grote Markt, on foot through the centre. The Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk is two blocks away.

Tip

Allow time for Os Provérbios and use the screen that explains the proverbs: it's the most enjoyable way to understand the painting. Visitors who have already been to the Rubenshuis will find here the circle of the painter's friends and colleagues.
