Clanwilliam – Western Cape about 230 km from Cape Town
How to get there
-
Aeroporto Internacional da Cidade do Cabo (CPT) Cape Town · 230 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
The nearest international airport is Cape Town, about 230 km via the N7, nearly three hours by car. The town is right on the road, with a signed exit. There is no train; long-distance buses that travel the N7 may stop in the region, but you need a car to get around the mountains.
How many days
One day for the town center, the museum and Ramskop Nature Reserve; two days to add the Sevilla Rock Art Trail at Pakhuis Pass. With three or four days you can include Wupperthal, the Wolfberg Cracks and the Stadsaal caves in the Cederberg interior.
When to go
August and September for the flowers, which depend on winter rains. September to November and March to May usually have mild days for hiking. From December to February the heat is strong in the valley; hike early. Winter, from June to August, is the rainy season, with cold nights.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes. The town is walkable, but the Sevilla Rock Art Trail, Wupperthal, the Wolfberg Cracks and the Stadsaal caves are outside it, on dirt roads and without regular transport. Bring water and fuel: there are few service stations in the mountains.

One day in Clanwilliam
-
Morning
Main street and Clanwilliam Museum
Start on the main street, with the Dutch Reformed church, the Anglican Church of St. John and 19th-century houses. Enter the Clanwilliam Museum, in the old gaol, to learn the region’s history: the San rock art, rooibos, Wupperthal leather shoes and the poet C. Louis Leipoldt, who grew up in town.
-
Afternoon
Ramskop Nature Reserve
Head to Ramskop Nature Reserve, on the shore of the Clanwilliam dam. The garden trails pass through native plants of the region, with views of the water and the Cederberg mountains. In August and September the garden is usually more in bloom.
-
Late afternoon
Pakhuis Pass
Drive out on the Pakhuis Pass road, east of town, to see the sandstone cliffs take on color in the low light. Stop in the road pullouts to view the valley. Return before dark, as the road is winding.
-
Evening
Dinner and rooibos tasting
Dine at one of the restaurants on the main street and order rooibos, which is produced in the region. With a clear sky and away from town lights, the stars are usually very visible.
