About Cathedral of San Felipe Neri
The Catedral San Felipe Neri is the main temple of Los Teques and the seat of the city’s diocese. It stands in the historic center, facing Plaza Bolívar, the meeting point of the capital of Miranda state.
The parish’s history follows that of the city itself, founded in 1777. There was first a modest oratory on the site; the first mass was celebrated on September 17, 1778, and a first church opened on May 31, 1790. The building you see today began construction in 1905 and was only inaugurated on July 16, 1956.
San Felipe Neri is the parish’s patron and gives the name by which the cathedral is known in the city. It continues to host masses, baptisms and weddings for the people of Los Teques.
Around Plaza Bolívar, inaugurated in 1911 and featuring an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar, are the state Government Palace and other official buildings. The square is small and can be seen in a few minutes, before or after visiting the cathedral.
