About Arturo Michelena House Museum
Arturo Michelena, born in Valencia in 1863, is one of Venezuela’s best-known painters, author of "Miranda en La Carraca" (1896). Ill with tuberculosis, in 1897 he moved into a house on Ayacucho Street in Los Teques for about eight months on doctors’ advice, who believed the cool mountain air would help his treatment.
Michelena died in Caracas on July 29, 1898, at age 35. The Los Teques house associated with his stay in the city became a memorial space, in a colonial-style building downtown at the corner of Sucre and Ayacucho streets.
The house-museum preserves the painter’s memory and also displays items and information about the history of Venezuela and the Mirandan capital. The visit is short and pairs well with a walk through the center and Plaza Bolívar.
If you want to see Michelena’s major works, most of them are in Caracas at the Galería de Arte Nacional and at the museum located in the painter’s house in the La Pastora neighborhood.
