About Guaviyú Thermal Baths
The Termas de Guaviyú are at km 432 of Ruta 3, about 60 km from Paysandú, on the banks of the Guaviyú stream, named after a native tree. The hot water was discovered by chance in the late 1950s when the state oil company ANCAP was drilling the area in search of oil.
The water comes from the Guaraní Aquifer, more than 1,000 meters deep, and reaches the pools at up to about 39 °C. The complex covers a large area, with outdoor and indoor pools at different temperatures, sports areas, and walking spaces.
The surroundings are rolling countryside with yatay palms. Along the stream is the Sendero Guaviyú trail, and boat rides and fishing are common in the region.
There are accommodations and a camping area inside and around the complex, and many visitors stay for several days. The hot springs are open year-round; in winter, from June to August, the warm pools are especially popular.
