Get to know the place
Alanya has beaches on both sides of a peninsula topped by a medieval fortress.
The castle runs along the rock above the Mediterranean. Below, the Red Tower and the old shipyard show the port’s role during the Seljuk period. Between the two levels are hillside streets: climbing to the fortress and strolling along the waterfront are complementary activities.
Cleopatra Beach stretches west of the peninsula, with urban infrastructure behind the sand. To the east, the city continues along the coast. Staying near the centre makes it easy to alternate sea, meals and heritage without changing base.
Alanya is on the Asian side of Turkey. In the northern-hemisphere summer, between June and September, the heat calls for spreading walks into the cooler parts of the day.

The local experience
Walls and courtyards run along the top of Alanya’s peninsula, with views to both sides of the coast.
Octagonal brick tower beside the harbor, linked to the Seljuk defensive system and to the area of the former shipyard.
Urban beach strip on the west side of Alanya’s peninsula, close to the Damlataş area and center services.
Stalactites and stalagmites occupy a cavity near the beach at the western base of Alanya’s peninsula.
Before you go
A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.
To combine Alanya's fortress with beach time, consider May, June, September, and October. The peak heat usually occurs in July and August, while November through March call for more flexibility due to rain and wind on the coast.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Three days allow one for the fortress, another for the historic harbor, and a third for the beach. Extend your stay if you want rest days.
The area around Damlataş and Cleopatra Beach brings accommodation, sand, and access to the peninsula close together. The center by the harbor is good for walking. In neighborhoods farther along the coast, factor in transport to reach attractions.
Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
