The province
Get to know San Cristóbal
San Cristóbal lies west of Santo Domingo, between the Caribbean Sea and the first ranges of the Central Mountain Range. The capital, of the same name, is a commercial city about 30 km from the country’s capital and has its place in history: it was there that, on November 6, 1844, the first Constitution of the Dominican Republic was signed.
The province’s main attraction is the Pomier caves, or Borbón caves, an anthropological reserve a few kilometers north of the city. There are dozens of limestone caves with paintings and carvings from the Taínos and earlier peoples, depicting birds, fish, human figures and ritual scenes, considered the largest set of rock art in the Antilles.
On the coast, the beaches of Najayo and Palenque, with dark sand and surf, attract families from the capital on weekends, with fish restaurants. Inland, rivers such as the Nizao and the Haina form swimming spots, and Cambita Garabitos and Villa Altagracia sit among green hills.
The guide has no cities listed in the province, which is less than an hour from Santo Domingo and can be visited as a day trip.
When to go
From December to April it usually rains less and the heat is milder. The caves can be visited year-round, but public access varies; check before you go. From June to November, the hurricane season, heavy showers are more frequent.
