Get to know San José de Ocoa

San José de Ocoa is a mountain province in the southern Central Range, between Peravia, Azua and La Vega. The capital, of the same name, sits in a valley about 500 metres above sea level, with mild climate, quiet streets and a tradition of community organization that has turned the region into an example of rural development.

Around it, the slopes are covered with coffee, fruit and vegetable crops, and cold-water rivers like the Ocoa and the Nizao form swimming spots among the rocks. Farms and rural guesthouses welcome visitors for hikes, horseback riding and river baths.

The road that climbs from San José de Ocoa to the north crosses Parque Nacional Valle Nuevo, a plateau over 2,000 metres high with pine forests and highland fields. Along the way is the Pyramids monument, which, according to tradition, marks the geographic centre of the island, and the road continues to Constanza, which the guide lists under the Jarabacoa and Constanza destination.

San José de Ocoa does not yet have towns listed in the guide. It is the southern gateway to Valle Nuevo and a quiet alternative for those seeking highlands about two hours from Santo Domingo.

When to go

From December to April there is less rain and the mountain roads are firmer; in winter, Valle Nuevo can have early-morning frost. The town has a mild climate year-round. In the highlands, rains are more frequent from May to November.
