About Haddon Hall

Haddon Hall sits on a slope above the River Wye, about 3 km from Bakewell. It is a fortified manor house whose construction began in the 12th century and continued into the early 17th century. It belongs to the Manners family, the same family as the Dukes of Rutland.

In the 18th century the family moved to another house and Haddon Hall was largely closed for almost two centuries. As a result it escaped the alterations that changed other houses: in the early 20th century it was restored, preserving the medieval great hall, the old kitchen, the long wood-paneled gallery and the chapel with medieval wall paintings.

The terraced gardens slope down toward the river, with rose bushes and valley views. The house is usually open from spring to autumn on selected days of the week; check before you go.
