About Chatsworth House

Chatsworth is one of the largest country houses in England and has belonged to the Cavendish family, Dukes of Devonshire, since the 16th century. It stands in the valley of the River Derwent, about 6 km from Bakewell, amid a park of meadows and woods open for walking.

The present house was rebuilt between the late 17th and early 18th centuries in a baroque style, and enlarged in the 19th century. The state rooms feature painted ceilings, staircases, furniture, sculptures and an art collection assembled by the family over centuries, including paintings, drawings and contemporary works.

The gardens blend several periods: the stepped cascade from the late 17th century, the Emperor Fountain with a very high jet, created in the 19th century by Joseph Paxton, glasshouses, a maze and modern sculptures. The surrounding park was redesigned in the 18th century by Capability Brown.

The house and gardens are open in season, which usually runs from spring to early winter; the park has broader access. Check the opening dates before you go.
