About Rutland Water

Rutland Water is a reservoir created in the 1970s by damming a valley in the small county of Rutland, east of Melton Mowbray. It is one of the largest artificial lakes in England and became a leisure destination with trails, a cycle path, watersports and a nature reserve.

The nature reserve, at the western end, is one of the Midlands’ main birdwatching sites. Ospreys were reintroduced there from the 1990s and are often seen between spring and late summer.

On the southern shore, the church of Normanton ended up at the water’s edge when the valley was flooded: its base was protected and infilled, and the tower and nave now appear as if rising from the lake. A cycle path circles nearly the whole lake and passes through stone villages.
