About Melton Carnegie Museum
The Melton Carnegie Museum occupies the former public library building from 1905, built with funds from industrialist Andrew Carnegie, in Thorpe End near the centre. The museum opened in 1977 and was later extended.
The displays tell the story of the town and the surrounding countryside: the market, rural life, the foods that made Melton famous such as the pork pie and Stilton cheese, and the fox-hunting tradition that brought nobles and horses to the town from across England in the 18th and 19th centuries. One well-known story is the 1837 incident in which a group of noblemen painted doors and a toll barrier red, linked to the origin of the English expression "paint the town red."
The museum is run by Leicestershire County and hosts temporary exhibitions through the year. There is no admission charge.
