About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is in the centre of Melton Mowbray, near the market square. It is a stone church in the shape of a cross with a central tower, and is regarded as the largest parish church in Leicestershire.
Most of the building was constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. The nave is flanked by double aisles in the transepts, and the upper part of the nave has a long row of windows that light the interior. The tower gained its upper stage at the end of the Middle Ages.
Inside there are funerary monuments of local families, stained glass from different periods and plaques that tell the parish’s history. The church remains in use, and visits are possible during opening times, outside services.
