About Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle stands on a hill about 20 km north of Melton Mowbray, overlooking the Belvoir valley. There have been castles on the site since the 11th century, and the estate has been owned by the Manners family, Dukes of Rutland, for centuries.

The present building was rebuilt between the late 18th and early 19th centuries in a romantic castellated style, with towers and battlements. Some work had to be redone after a fire in 1816. The state rooms contain furniture, tapestries and a collection of paintings gathered by the family over generations.

The grounds include terraced gardens and woodlands. The castle remains the family residence and opens to visitors on seasonal dates, usually concentrated between spring and autumn; check before you go.
