About The Lowry
The Lowry is an arts centre at Salford Quays, on Manchester’s former docks, opened in 2000. The steel-and-glass building stands at the tip of a pier, between the dock water and the MediaCityUK area, and houses theatres, performance spaces and galleries.
The name honours Laurence Stephen Lowry, a painter born in 1887 who lived and worked in Salford. Lowry became known for scenes of streets, factories and crowds in industrial northern England, with small, elongated figures. The centre’s galleries hold a large collection of his paintings and drawings, shown in rotating exhibitions.
Besides Lowry’s work, the galleries host exhibitions by other artists, and the theatres present theatre, dance, musicals and concerts.
Around the centre, Salford Quays has waterside promenades and pedestrian bridges. Across the water is the Imperial War Museum North, in Trafford.
