About Sizergh Castle

Sizergh is about 5 km south of Kendal, on a rural estate with gardens and woodland. The house belonged to the Strickland family from the 13th century until it was given to the National Trust in 1950; the family remains associated with it.

The oldest part is a medieval stone tower, built for defence at a time of attacks on the Scottish border. In later centuries the house was extended, and the interior includes rooms lined with carved wood from the Elizabethan period, along with family furniture, portraits and objects.

The gardens feature a limestone rock garden with mountain plants, ponds, orchards and paths across the estate, with views over the fields of the River Kent valley.

The house usually opens from spring to autumn, and the gardens have longer opening periods; check the dates before you go.
