About Levens Hall and Gardens

Levens Hall is about 8 km south of Kendal, by the River Kent. The house was extended in the Elizabethan era around a medieval stone tower and retains rooms with wooden panelling, decorative plaster ceilings and antique furniture.

Levens Hall is best known for its topiary garden. It was laid out from 1694 by the French gardener Guillaume Beaumont, and much of the trees, yews and box clipped into cones, spheres and other shapes follow the original plan. It is cited as one of the oldest surviving topiary gardens in the world to retain its original design.

The house remains a family residence and opens to visitors in season, usually from spring to autumn on selected days of the week; check before you go.
