About Laguna de Itá

The lagoon of Itá, also called Mártires de Acosta Ñu, is the town’s main leisure area. According to locals, it has never dried up. On the banks there are lookouts, a pier, benches and a small children’s playground, and the area around the water hosts part of the patron’s festival in early February.

What draws the most attention are the caimans. A long-time resident says a pair was released into the lagoon and began to reproduce, and that other animals were brought there later; today there are about 80, according to Paraguayan press. They usually stay on the banks and in the water, visible from the lookouts.

The lagoon also has its legends. One says that during the War of the Triple Alliance a woman refused water to thirsty soldiers and a storm transformed her house into the lagoon. Another says that soldiers of Marshal López threw a gold bell into the water so it would not become a trophy for invaders.
