About Kokopo War and Cultural Museum
The Kokopo War and Culture Museum is near the waterfront, a short walk from the town center. It displays objects collected after the Japanese occupation of the Gazelle Peninsula, between 1942 and 1945.
In the courtyard and rooms there are tanks, cannons, vehicles, aircraft wreckage, bombs and weapons, as well as photographs from the Japanese and German periods. Panels explain the capture of Rabaul in 1942 and the time when the town was the main Japanese base in the South Pacific.
At the back, a smaller room houses cultural objects from New Britain, such as masks and items used in ceremonies by the peninsula’s peoples.
Visits are often combined with the Bita Paka War Cemetery, south of town, as a half-day outing.
