About Omarakana
Omarakana is located inland on the island of Kiriwina, halfway between Losuia and Kaibola. It is the village where the Trobriand paramount chief lives; he oversees oral traditions, the magic of yams and the kula rituals.
As in other villages on the island, the yam houses are arranged around the central square and stand out above the residential houses. The chief’s house is the most elaborate: painted red, black and white with ancestral designs and adorned with conch shells, which indicate the status of its owner. In the Trobriands, stored yams function as wealth and are exchanged on ceremonial occasions.
It was in Omarakana that anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski lived during part of his research on the islands between 1915 and 1918, work that gave rise to classic books on the kula and life in the Trobriands.
Visits are made with a guide and with the community’s consent. The chief often receives visitors in the village square.
