About Samarai Island
Samarai is an island of about 29 hectares in the China Strait, near the southeastern tip of New Guinea. Captain John Moresby passed by in 1873 and called it Dinner Island. A mission was established in 1878, and the island became an administrative centre after the annexation of British New Guinea in 1888.
In the early 20th century Samarai was a busy commercial port and at its peak the second-largest town in the Territory of Papua, after Port Moresby. Its importance declined from the 1920s, and in 1942 the town was demolished by British order to prevent it falling into Japanese hands. Samarai remained the provincial capital until 1968, when the administration moved to Alotau.
In 2006 the government declared Samarai a national historic heritage island. A walking circuit around the island passes the jetty and old buildings, among trees and small beaches, with views over the strait and neighbouring islands.
The island’s name appears in the phrase “from Sorong to Samarai,” used as a symbol of unity across the island of New Guinea from end to end.
