About Garu Hot River
The Garu hot river runs through the forest west of Kimbe, inside the Garu wildlife management area at the base of the Willaumez Peninsula. The water is heated by underground volcanic springs, a sign of New Britain’s volcanic origin.
The river forms natural pools among rocks and roots beneath the trees, where the warm water mixes with cooler stream water. Bathing, surrounded by forest, is the most popular land excursion for divers on the bay.
The Garu wildlife management area is cared for by local communities and hosts New Britain bird species sought by birdwatchers.
Access is by road from the bay accommodations, with a local guide, and the visit usually takes half a day.
