Hokitika Beach

About Hokitika Beach

Hokitika Beach is a short walk from the town centre, facing the Tasman Sea — open and with strong surf. The dark sand mixes with stones and logs of all sizes that West Coast rivers deliver to the sea and the waves return to the shore.

Using this wood, the town assembled a Hokitika sign on the sand, which has become one of the region’s most photographed spots. Since 2003 the beach has hosted a festival in January where locals and artists build sculptures from driftwood and other items found on the sand; these are displayed for several days.

Sunset is the most popular time, when the sun sets over the sea on a clear evening. The beach is not recommended for swimming because of the surf and currents, but it is good for walking and searching for colourful stones.
