About Hokitika Gorge
Hokitika Gorge is a narrow section of the Hokitika River, about 33 km from town at the foot of the Southern Alps. The water, fed by glaciers, carries glacial flour and takes on a milky‑blue color, which is more vivid on sunny days and after several dry days; after heavy storms the river turns grey.
A trail leaves the car park and winds through native forest to the gorge. The original suspension bridge, dating from 1933, crosses the river above pale rock walls. In 2020 a second 90‑meter bridge — one of the country’s longest — was opened upstream; it runs over the trees of an island and allows the route to be done as a loop.
From the track there are sections with access to the riverbanks where you can view the water up close. The visit is short and is commonly included on itineraries for those passing through Hokitika on the way to the glaciers.
